Well, I was sitting pretty high on my horse.... thinking Vladik was the PERFECT host kid. And he IS great, don't get me wrong. But I was feeling *pretty pleased* with my lot... no car sickness, eating everything he tried, showering without being prompted, etc.
Well, he threw up in the car this evening on the way to Payless.
He doesn't like pizza (not really surprised there),
and I don't think he's using soap or shampoo when he showers. Come to think of it, he may not be *showering* at all. I hear the water running, but it may be the sink. Hmmmmm.
So much for my model host child. :-)
On the bright side, he DOES wash (or at least wet) his hands after using the restroom, he continues to say prayers with us, and he helps clear the table after meals.
We cleaned out/swept up the garage this morning before it got too hot. He didn't offer to help- even when he saw us working, but when I indicated he should help sweep, he got right to it.

I can tell he's getting comfortable with us-- or at least with Joe and Kyle, because he's starting to tease and pick on them a little, in his own way. Not mean spirited... at least no more so than when Joe picks on Kyle. Joe was getting a little irritated about it tonight and I told him that that's what it sometimes feels like to have an older brother.. and to remember that next time he feels like irritating Kyle just for the fun of it.
I do need to remind Joe, though, that Vladik gets his cues on how to treat other kids from the way Joe treats Kyle. It's a good reminder for all of us.
We went to Balloonfest tonight. It was SO HOT!
Joe and Kyle really enjoyed it (as usual)... Vladik seemed underwhelmed.
He was more excited about the ice cream afterwards. :-)
It's going to be even hotter tomorrow... maybe we'll go swimming.
That's funny about the shower thing. How'd you figure that out? I'd love to see pics. His bio pic is so institutional looking.
ReplyDeleteMisha (same orphanage) doesn't want to use soap, either. One thing we learned at Christmas was that he was afraid of the shampoo in his eyes. I bought some "kid" shampoo and explained (google translate) that it's American shampoo for kids so it doesn't burn. That solved the hair washing thing, but he still wouldn't use soap or a wash cloth (they don't have wash cloths!). So I bought some Spongebob bubble bath and now he takes baths -- at least he gets clean from the waist down. lol
